The Sunny Side of Smut

The article The Sunny Side of Smut is an argumentative exposition on pornography brings no harm and it may even reduce sexual violence. The article by Melinda Wenner Moyer states that pornography brings no negative effects on people and one less likely to commit sexual crimes. However, pornography is still an immoral act and might lead to unwanted pregnancies.

In the past, pornography is likely hard to get compare in nowadays. The age restriction is not a matter too because no one would know about the internet user. In contrary with most of people believes, recent research prove that pornography consumption does not make users more aggressive, promote sexism or brings harm to relationships. In other words, pornography might make some people less likely to commit sexual crimes. Research in 2007, the scientists found that users of mainstream, nonviolent pornography were neither more nor less sexually satisfied than nonusers. Regular pornography use does not seem to encourage sexism, either. Pornography users indicated that the amount of pornography the subjects consumed did not predict whether they would hold negative attitudes toward women (Alan McKee, 2007). Although consumers of pornography did not display more negative attitudes toward women, they were more likely than other respondents to believe that women should be protected from harm—what the investigators call “benevolent sexism.” Some experts believe the consumption of pornography may actually reduce the desire to rape by offering a safe, private outlet for deviant sexual desires. Countries that allowed the access of pornography were at their lowest rate of sexual crimes and the number drops gradually. It is important to note that these associations are just that—associations. They do not prove that pornography is the cause of the observed crime reductions. Nevertheless, the trends “just don’t fit with the theory that rape and sexual assault are in part influenced by pornography,” Ferguson explains. “At this point I think we can say the evidence just isn’t there, and it is time to retire this belief.” Pornography helps them keep their abnormal sexuality within the confines of their imagination (Richard Green, 1992) It turns out that among porn viewers, the amount of porn each subject consumed had nothing to do with his or her mental state. What mattered most was whether the subjects tried to control their sexual thoughts and desires. The more they tried to clamp down on their urge for sex or porn, the more likely they were to consider their own pornography use a problem. It’s all about “personal views and personal values,” In other word, the effects of pornography—positive or negative—have little to do with the medium itself and everything to do with the person viewing it (Michael P. Twohig, 2009).

Fickle Friend (Frenemies)

"frenemies" is a popular "title" to the particular people who is a friend but in the same time backstabbing one from behind. Moreover, this kind of people also known as ambivalent friends which describing complicated rapport about someone that could bring you up or bring you down by certain reasons. They are such well-meaning friends who overly competitive, the supporters when you really in need but cannot quite take pleasure in your successes and last but not least, a buddy who willingly wanted to help you but at the same time talking behind you after that. Thus, in this troublesome situation, qualities such as warmth and understanding go hand-in-hand with condemnation, elimination and envy.

Well, nobody perfect but, “frenemies” are consistently problematic and imperfect. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychologist from Brigham Young University stated that “Once you have develop ambivalent feelings for a person, later on your future interactions with that person may be judged through that lens too”. Likewise, we are able to think of our supporters’ comment rather than these ambivalent friends. In fact, family also has a tendency to become ambivalent people than acquaintances. However, this kind of family would give you more support and warmth that you cannot afford to give up even though it is hard to swap the troublesome members.

The next avenue is the effect of unhealthy life when you are befriending with ambivalent friend. By having “frenemies”, it will increase one’s blood pressure reading. Moreover, the risk of depression also become higher and you are less resistance to stress. It is common things when you are experience so much hurtful behaviors with the members of the group. Due to this, Holt-Lunstad found that people still befriend with ambivalent friends because the relationship has a memory which stand up a fade history. They tend to outcome the hurt feelings and stay not to give up with the unpredictable people.

On the other hand, it is okay for you to keep permanent the good rapport as long as you know how to manage yourself with the pain. The Brigham Young’s psychologist suggested you to learn how to avoid previously problematic subjects or situation. Furthermore, provide your frenemy’s motives a positive or at least neutral spin. At the end of this, you can work on keeping your end of the friendship bargain and start with controlling your own behavior and being the kind of friend you’d want others to be.

Study: Playing a Video Game Helps Teens Beat Depression

The article Study: Playing a Video Game Helps Teens Beat Depression is an informative exposition on fantasy video games can helps teen to conquer depression as the same as attend a counseling session. The article suggests that the best way for teens to overcome depression is by playing video games. Apart from that, video games do helps to release tension after a hard day of work.
In the article stated that video games are more often regarded as causes of mental illness than as cures, but in a new study, a specially designed fantasy game helped teens conquer depression just as well as — if not better than — usual counseling. Depression can be devastating among youths, yet fewer than 1 in 5 depressed teens are treated, in part because they are reluctant to seek a therapist’s help. When people with depression stop buying into ideas like “Everyone hates me” or “I’m a loser” and can recognize that these “GNATs” are not statements of fact about reality, but simply thoughts twisted by depression, it can stop the cycle of rumination that sustains the disease.  Nearly two thirds were girls, reflecting the greater prevalence of the disorder in women. Their average age was about 15. Half of the group was randomly assigned to play games, while the others were assigned to receive “treatment as usual,” which typically consisted of one-on-one counseling over five sessions. Interestingly, however, while 81% of the video-game players said they would recommend it to their friends, traditional therapy got a greater endorsement, with 96% recommending it to others. It is at least as good as treatment as usual, would be cheaper and easier to disseminate and could be used to increase access to therapy. It could provide access to treatment for young people who may be reluctant to have more conventional therapy. A similar technique may work for adults as well as teens. some research suggests that face-to-face therapy is important because of the supportive relationships that are forged between clients and therapists — the “active ingredient” in treatment — the success of computerized interventions suggests that perhaps that relationship is unnecessary. Although it’s clear that having strong relationships is critical to good mental health — and computerized treatments likely won’t prove to be adequate for depression if they don’t help people develop and maintain them — the current research suggests that onscreen treatment could bring relief to many teens, without the risks or stigma of antidepressant drugs or weekly therapy visits.
The article was written by Maia Szalavitz who is a neuroscience journalist obsessed with addiction, love, evidence-based living, empathy, fertility and pretty much everything related to brain and behavior. Szalavitz is the co-author of Born for Love: Why Empathy is Essential — and Endangered (Morrow, 2010) and The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog (Basic, 2006), both with Dr. Bruce D. Perry. She is the author of Help at Any Cost: How the Troubled-Teen Industry Cons Parents and Hurts Kids (Riverhead, 2006), the first book-length exposé of the “tough love” business. Her work has been published in TIME Magazine, the New York Times, Elle, Scientific American Mind, the Washington Post, New Scientist and Psychology Today, among many others.             Games bring negative effects towards students such as lack of sleep and dizziness. However, recent study show that games can reduce stress. This is because students play games in order to overcome stress. Student’s life is very hard and adventurous, in order to maintain their mood and mind in active point. Furthermore, games makes student neglect their study and assignment assign by lecturer. However, students themselves know their responsibility as a student. They will finish up the assignment before playing games. After a hard day of study, then only they start to play games, to relax their mind and brain. Research shows that, if students too stress, it will affect their study and influence with their works. Lastly, playing games lead to waste of money and wasting time. Nevertheless, most games nowadays are online games. They no need to spend money to buy games like before, just click and register for free. Besides, game nowadays including educational idea and using English as a medium of communication. It is not a wasting of time because one can improve and learn English while play games.
Games functional as same as counseling session to overcome depression. Many researchers has proved the claims as they found out that, student who play games was more productive than the one who is not. Most of them spend their free time to play games which is involved with strategy and need the brain to work efficiently. Moreover, games develop one brains based on the genre. Strategy games force the brains to think which strategies and plan can be used to counter the enemy. When one brains working, indirectly the cells of the brains connected between each other and make it more effectives. Chess set is considered as a game also, which need the skill of one to winning over the enemy. This type of games really helps to polish one skills of critical thinking. Lastly, playing games is one of the methods to relax one mind. If one is stressful, by playing games, it can overcomes the stress and let the brains to take a break. Experts states that playing games depends on the type of the games, some of games bring positive effects rather than negatives impact, choose which one u want.
By reading this article, students would change their perception on playing games and will spend more time on gaming to overcome depression rather than do something insane. This article also helps to open general public eyes toward playing games. They will think and spend much time to find a relevance article about this in order to make sure it is proven and reliable. Some of them would not hesitate to play games if they stress rather than spending money to meet a counselor. Teenagers would continue play and play games when they know the result of playing games is positive but in the same time, would focus more on studies first before gaming.
As a conclusion, playing games brings positive effects and can be apply by students and also adults to overcome stress and depression. Depression will lead to premature death which occurs frequently these days on students and teenagers. By hook or by crook, one needs to find a best way that suits them to overcome depression.

Are you a Romantic or a Libertine?-Peck M. S

Dr. Morgan Scott Peck was born on 23 May 1936 in New York City was an American psychiatrist who focused his work on reassessing certain human conduct in social interaction. From the excerpt Are you a Romantic or a Libertine from his best-known book, The Road Less Traveled, Peck wrote his opinion on the feeling of love between human being and is this mutual attraction a real love and romance or just for manipulating the romantic code.

Love and romantic

Love is not something that can be simply defined as everyone has their own believe on how to define love. Based on the excerpt, love is a feeling of affection, fondness towards an individual. As love is hard to define, people can only feel love as a symptom and feeling of fondness and affection, with strong longing to be with someone or something that they loved. Yet, love also may come based on unexpected and insensible feelings that one has over another person.

Romantic can be defined as a common sense of attraction in the love affair. Romantic is necessary to begin the feeling of affection between lovers. Romantic is something that the lovers can give to convince and attract their beloved to be mutually attracted. Romantic is needed in one relationship to show appreciation, to impress and definitely, to establish a relationship.

Libertine
This type of person use love to attain their needs and personal delight. The Libertine totally has no concern about their beloved’s feeling and they only put their personal feeling first. Libertines have the ability to manipulate and trick their target, and have effective strategies and tricks to persuade and exploit them.

Eventually, people will experience being in love and they will decide whether it is meaningful or a bad luck for them.
